What's the International Day of Yoga?

June 21 which the is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11. The declaration came after the call for the adoption of International Day of Yoga by Indian Prime Minister NarendraModi during his address to UN General Assembly, last year. 175 out of 193 members of the UN agreed on establishing an International Day of Yoga. To celebrate the first International Day of Yoga,on 21 June 2015in Korea, various events including yoga sessions and activitieswill be held inSeoul, Daegu and Pusan.

"Yoga is not about exercise but a holistic approach to happiness and well-being," said VikramDoraiswami, the Ambassador of India to S. Korea in a curtain raiser press briefing on 5 June 2015 at Indian Culture Center located Hanmam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul.

On 21 June 2015, to celebrate the International Day of Yoga, at Raj Ghat(a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi) in Mumbai, India, mass demonstration of yoga asanas by around 4,000 Indians, led by Prime Minister NarendraModi, will be performed.In Korea, local yoga associations will run sessions and workshops on that day. The International Day of Yoga will start with 'the Let's Yoga Together' event at Seoul City Square in Jung District and will be followed by the events at COEX, Samsung-dong, Gangnam-gu in Seoul, at Dongsungro in Daegu and at Pusan Citizen Park in Pusan.

These events will be a good chance for yoga to be introduced to the Korean public. "1-2 minute yoga can be practiced in everyday life. Yoga should be considered as a part of life." said Han, Yoo-jin, the Director of Aim Yoga research & education institute, who was there as one of the association representatives.She added that changing the method of breathing or walking 100 to 500 steps before meals are ways of practicing yoga in life.
