Hanseo University, South Korea, conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy

upon Dr. Justice Dalveer Bhandari, Judge of the International Court of Justice

On March 30, Hanseo University conferred an honorary doctorate of philosophy upon Dr. Justice Dalveer Bhandari of India, Judge of the International Court of Justice. The Conferment Ceremony was held at the International Conference Hall in Yeonam Library of Hanseo University and was attended by President Ki-Sun Ham, university staff and students, Mr. Yeong Namgung, Governor of Chungnam, Mr. Satish Sivan, Deputy Chief of Mission from the Embassy of India, Seoul, and there was approximately 100 people in attendance.

Dr. Justice Bhandari studied humanities and law at Jodhpur University in India and earned his Master of Laws from Northwestern University in Chicago, USA. Since then, he has served as an attorney, high court judge, and judge of the Supreme Court in India for 43 years, becoming an internationally renowned person as well as a leading judge in helping the underprivileged. He was elected judge of the International Court of Justice in 2012 and was re-elected to another nine-year term in November 2017.

In President Ham’s welcoming address, he spoke of Justice Bhandari’s accomplishments in upholding law and justice in India, as well as making wise decisions on various disputes as an international judge. President Ham described Justice Bhandari’s role as a bridge to the ongoing efforts in resolving various conflicts to bring about reconciliation and peace in Korea.

In response, Justice Bhandari said, “I consider it a great privilege to receive an honorary doctorate from the great Hanseo University, which is carrying out specialized education that is recognized by the world. I am deeply moved and will remember this day forever."

At Hanseo University’s Taean Aviation Campus, a naming ceremony was given in honor of Justice Bhandari as the covers were unveiled from an aircraft to reveal his name written on the front side. The newly named aircraft will provide the wings for students dreaming of becoming pilots.

The decision was made to confer an honorary doctorate of philosophy upon Dr. Justice Dalveer Bhandari through the recommendation of Dr. Achyuta Samanta, founder of KIIT & KISS, a sister university and social service group in India.
