Media Report: Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction turns eyes to Vietnam, Iran, India, instead of Middle East (Maeil Business News)

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction hit hard by the Middle East shock is pioneering emerging markets in order to create new opportunities. The lands of new opportunities for the company include India pursuing 'Make in India' initiative, Iran opening its door to foreign countries, and Vietnam boasting rapid growth in Southeast Asia.

Jung Ji-taek, Co-Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction who takes overall responsibilities for overseas business, fled to India immediately after Lunar New Year holidays. The purpose of his visit was to plant a flag in the local power generation market which has grown sharply by attending 'Make in India Week' exhibition organized by India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

After hearing the news that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would attend the opening ceremony of the event on February 13, Vice Chairman Jung made elaborate preparations. He pull up the Prime Minister Modi's SNS screen featuring his New Year message in Korean as a big banner on the display located in front of the Doosan's booth.

By making use of virtual reality which has been a key buzzword in recent years, Doosan enabled visitors to see its history about the construction of its large power plants and desalination facilities in deserts and remote areas when they wear special glasses in its booth. Reportedly, Prime Minister Modi had a talk with Vice Chairman Jung, ambassador to India and other officials in Doosan's booth. Thanks to such marketing activities customized to each market, Doosan won three projects in India over the past six months: Harduaganj, Pudimadaka, and Barh 1 thermal power plants.

Vice Chairman Jung said that "India's power generation market would grow steadily as thermal power plant orders in India are expected to be 18 gigawatts a year on average by 2020."

Vietnam has already become Doosan's largest overseas production base. Doosan Vina, a local branch of Doosan established in 2009 with the investment of 300 billion won, is located on the site spanning around 330,000 pyeong in the Dung Quat Industrial Zone, Vietnam. Such preemptive investment began to bear fruits in the country in 2012. Starting with Mong Duong II thermal power plant, Doosan has won about 7 trillion won projects in Vietnam over the past five years, including Song Hau 1 thermal power plant.

Doosan also pins high hopes on Iran which opens its door in 37 years. Iran with a population of 80 million, which has the fourth largest oil reserves and the largest natural gas reserves in the world, is expected to invite $140 billion to $150 billion orders related to social overhead capital (SOC) this year.
